Elucidat vs Articulate Rise in short
In the Elucidat vs Articulate Rise decision, choose Rise 360 if a small team needs clean, responsive courses fast and wants packages that keep running in any LMS. Choose Elucidat if many authors, reviewers and languages must work inside one controlled platform, with role permissions, rules-based branching and a file-friendly translation workflow. Both export SCORM and track xAPI.
Quick verdict
- Pick Articulate Rise 360 for speed, a short learning curve and courses you fully own once exported.
- Pick Elucidat for large, multi-language programs that need user roles, personalized paths and central control.
- Pick both only when two different teams have two different jobs (see Can you use both?).
Note on names: Learning Pool acquired Elucidat on October 23, 2025. Today Elucidat's website redirects to Confirm (formerly Learning Pool), which sells the tool as "Create (formerly Elucidat)". Its help center still calls the two editors Elucidat Author and Elucidat Create. This page says "Elucidat" for both unless the difference matters.

We compared Articulate Rise 360 and Elucidat on the questions corporate training teams ask before they buy a license or brief a vendor. Every tool fact comes from the vendors' own help docs and pricing pages, checked on October 16, 2026. Where a point is our opinion, we say so.
The criteria:
1. Who will author, and how fast they can learn the tool.
2. Design control, interactivity and personalized learning paths.
3. Collaboration, review and user roles.
4. Translation and localization.
5. LMS output (SCORM, xAPI) and where the course is hosted.
6. Mobile output and accessibility.
7. Pricing model and what drives total cost.
IKHYA builds courses in both tools, so we have no reason to favor either one. (If you are still comparing more than two tools, start with our guide to eLearning authoring tools.)
Elucidat vs Articulate Rise at a glance
| Criterion | Articulate Rise 360 | Elucidat (Author / Create) |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | Web-based authoring tool inside an Articulate 360 subscription | Cloud authoring platform, sold by Confirm as "Create (formerly Elucidat)" |

What are Articulate Rise and Elucidat?
Articulate Rise 360
A web-based authoring tool included in an Articulate 360 subscription. You build a course from an outline of sections and lessons, then fill each lesson with blocks such as text, images, tabs, flashcards, timelines, knowledge checks and scenarios. Every course is fully responsive on computers, tablets and phones. Rise sits next to Storyline 360, Articulate's slide-based tool for custom interactions, in the same subscription. That is why review sites often compare "Elucidat vs Articulate 360" rather than Rise alone.
Elucidat
A cloud authoring platform built for teams that produce learning at volume. Its product page says it is best suited for "L&D teams in large, global organizations". It has two editors, and the difference matters when you buy:
| Feature | Elucidat Author | Elucidat Create |
|---|---|---|
| Positioning | The full platform | "A newer, more streamlined product" for people new to learning design or who need to build quickly |
| Branching with Rules | Yes | No |
| Release types | SCORM for LMS, Online Link, Backup SCORM, API | SCORM and Online Link only |
| SCORM 2004 editions | 2nd, 3rd and 4th | 4th only (plus SCORM 1.2) |
| User roles | Extended default roles, custom roles, External Collaborators | Smaller role set; no External Collaborators |
| Folders and Departments | Yes | No |
| Moving projects | Can receive Create projects | Create projects can move to Author, not the other way |
If a vendor demo shows you Elucidat, ask which editor your plan includes.
Ease of use: which is faster to learn?
Short answer: Rise is quicker to learn for most authors. Elucidat Create is close to Rise in simplicity; Elucidat Author takes longer because it gives you more control.

Articulate Rise 360
In Rise, an author picks a block, types or drops in media, and the block handles layout and responsiveness. There is little to break, which is why subject matter experts (SMEs) can often build or edit lessons themselves. The trade-off is that you design within the blocks Articulate provides.
Elucidat Create
Elucidat Create offers templates, pre-built designs, PowerPoint import and AI features to start a project quickly.
Elucidat Author
Elucidat Author adds Layout mode, where layout designers change the structure of pages, plus Rules and Styles. That depth is the reason teams choose Author, and also the reason it needs a trained core team. Author also has a "Guided Author" role that limits SMEs to editing page content, so experts can contribute without touching the design.
Our view: if your authors are SMEs who build a course a few times a year, Rise or Elucidat Create will feel easier. If you have dedicated learning designers producing every week, Author's extra control pays back the learning time.
Design control, interactivity and personalization
Short answer: Rise gives you consistent, polished blocks with limited layout control. Elucidat gives you more control over layout and branding, plus rules-based personalization.
Articulate Rise 360
- Block library: text, media, interactive blocks (tabs, flashcards, timelines and more), knowledge checks and quiz lessons with multiple choice, multiple response, fill-in-the-blank and matching questions.
- A scenario block for branching conversations.
- Storyline blocks: build a custom interaction in Storyline 360 and drop it into the Rise course.
- A code block for custom HTML, CSS or JavaScript, and custom blocks (beta) on a free canvas. Articulate notes that custom blocks are not responsive and do not yet fully meet accessibility guidelines.
- Brands: logo, colors and fonts saved once and applied to courses.
Elucidat
- Styles apply brand changes across projects; Layout mode (Author) changes page structure.
- Rules show or hide pages based on a learner's score, completed pages, result or answers. A common use is a role selector at the start: Managers, Sales and Support each see only their pages, and hidden pages don't count toward progress or score.
- Social polling and "clips" let learners see how peers answered (built for hosted releases; Backup SCORM is not optimized for them).
- PowerPoint import and AI-generated course outlines to start projects.
Where it shows on real programs (our view): one compliance course for several job roles is the clearest case for Elucidat Rules: one course, three paths, one completion record. In Rise, the usual answer is separate courses per role or a Storyline block, which is more files to maintain.
Collaboration, review and user roles
Short answer: both tools let several authors work in the cloud. Elucidat has the deeper permission model; Rise is simpler to run.
Older comparisons, including the previous version of this page, called Rise's collaboration "basic". That is no longer accurate. With Articulate 360 Teams, team members can create and edit different lessons in the same course at the same time, share block templates, and collect stakeholder comments through Review 360, then reply to and resolve them inside Rise.
Elucidat goes further on governance:
- Roles: Account Owner, Administrator, Analytics, Author, Author and analytics, Developer (API access), Guided Author, Layout designer, Restricted Layout Designer, reviewer roles and External Collaborator.
- Custom roles: create or change roles with Advanced User Management, included in the Team and Enterprise tiers or as a paid add-on to Growth.
- Access levels: control which projects each user can see.
- External Collaborators: invite reviewers who don't have an Elucidat account to comment on a project (Author only).
- Version control: restore a previously saved version of a project.
If several business units, agencies or regional teams share one authoring account, Elucidat's roles and access levels are a real advantage. If your team is five people who trust each other, Rise's simpler model is less admin.
Translation and localization
Short answer: the gap has narrowed. Elucidat has managed multi-language courses for years and lets your own translators work from files. Rise now does much the same through Articulate Localization, paid with credits.
Older comparisons, including the previous version of this page, say Rise needs one separate course per language. That changed with Articulate Localization: language versions now sit in one Rise project and can be published as one LMS package.
| Feature | Articulate Rise 360 (with Articulate Localization) | Elucidat |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in machine translation | 80+ languages; uses credits bought separately (2 credits per source character, per target language) | Auto-Translate, 75 languages, powered by Amazon Translate and DeepL |
| How language versions are managed | All languages in one project "stack" that shares the theme and structure | One Parent course plus language Variations that inherit its layout and structure |
| When the source changes | Structural changes apply to all languages; new text is detected and only the updates are translated | You sync from the Parent; you can auto-translate only the text changed since the last sync |
| Local changes per language | Editing a target-language asset disconnects it from the source | Editing an element in a Variation stops it following the Parent |
| One package for all languages | Yes: one LMS package, learners choose their language at launch (or one package per language) | Yes: release from the Parent for one SCORM or Online Link with a language menu at the start |
| Right-to-left (Arabic, Hebrew) | Supported; not for custom blocks | Right-to-left text direction setting; column layouts may need manual changes |
| Human review | Validators review the translations in Review 360 | Side-by-side mode, translation glossary |
| Translation files for your own translators | Not described for Rise in Articulate's localization docs | CSV and XLIFF 1.2 files |
Our view: if your organization already has a translation vendor or a translation memory, Elucidat's file-based route fits more easily. If you want translation inside the authoring tool with no files at all, both work, and Rise's cost scales with credits.
Machine translation is a first draft in either tool. For compliance or safety content, plan a human review by a native speaker, plus a check of the layout in every language. IKHYA's eLearning translation and localization service covers 40+ languages, with human or AI voiceover.
LMS, SCORM, xAPI and hosting
Short answer: both tools publish SCORM and support xAPI. The bigger difference is where the course lives after you publish it.
Articulate Rise 360
Rise exports xAPI, SCORM 2004, SCORM 1.2, AICC and cmi5 packages, plus web and PDF versions. Tracking can be based on completion percentage, a Storyline block or a quiz result. The exported package contains the course, so it runs from your LMS or web server. Articulate's FAQ says learners "can always view Rise 360 courses that you host on your own web server or LMS".
Elucidat
Elucidat offers SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004, an Online Link (a web address you share, no LMS needed), xAPI as a tracking mode on top of SCORM or Online Link, a Backup SCORM, and an API release (Author). It does not export cmi5, AICC or LTI. Its standard SCORM for LMS release is a small wrapper (about 7KB) that loads the course from Elucidat's servers. That design gives you three benefits:
- Re-release: update a live course in minutes without re-uploading anything to the LMS.
- Analytics: learner data flows back to Elucidat's dashboard.
- Bookmarking: progress is stored on Elucidat's servers, not in a limited SCORM suspend-data string.
What happens if you stop paying?
Elucidat: SCORM for LMS and Online Link releases stop working once the account is closed, because they need Elucidat's servers. Export a Backup SCORM (a self-contained package) before you leave.
Rise 360: packages you already exported keep running in your LMS. Your editable courses stay on Articulate's servers for up to six months after the subscription ends; you cannot edit or download them after that.
Our view: neither model is wrong, but ask the question before you sign. Hosted releases are a strength if you update courses often and want analytics. Self-contained packages are safer if courses must run for years, offline, or behind a strict firewall.
LMS platforms we have delivered courses to include Moodle, TalentLMS, Docebo and Cornerstone, and we test every course in your LMS before launch.
Mobile and responsive output
Short answer: both produce responsive courses; Rise needs zero extra work.
Rise courses automatically adapt to computers, tablets and phones, because every block is responsive by design (custom blocks are the exception). Elucidat courses also responsively adapt to desktop, laptop, tablet and phone, and you can preview each screen size while building. Authoring is different: Elucidat runs in desktop browsers only, and Rise authoring needs a Mac or Windows desktop or laptop.
Accessibility
Short answer: both tools can produce accessible courses, and in both the author decides the result.
Articulate states that Rise 360 supports WCAG 2.1 Level AA, and that its blocks are accessible "when authored thoughtfully". Elucidat publishes an accessibility statement for its courses (screen readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver and TalkBack; full keyboard navigation; semantic HTML5) and an external audit of published courses against WCAG 2.1 Level AA and Section 508, dated March 27, 2023. Both vendors say the content an author writes and styles still has to follow accessibility practice: alt text, captions, color contrast and meaningful link text.
IKHYA builds accessible eLearning to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 in either tool.
Pricing model and what drives total cost
Short answer: Rise comes with an Articulate 360 seat billed per seat, per year. Elucidat does not publish prices and is sold in tiers.
Articulate Rise 360
- Rise is not sold alone: it comes with an Articulate 360 AI seat, which also includes Storyline 360, publishing for stakeholder review, AI features and Reach (300 active learners a year on Teams plans).
- Billed per seat, per year; 14-day free trial.
- AI avatars and translation use credits bought separately; credits expire at the end of the term.
- The Frontline plan does not include Rise or Storyline.
Elucidat
- No public price: Confirm's pricing page shows only "Get pricing" for Create.
- Help docs name three tiers: Growth, Team and Enterprise. Custom user roles come with Team and Enterprise, or as a paid add-on to Growth.
- Elucidat counts the unique learners who access your released courses each year in your usage data. Ask how that count affects your plan.
What drives total cost (beyond the license)
- number of authors who need seats or user accounts;
- number of languages and how often content changes;
- learner volume (for Elucidat's usage data and for hosting choices);
- how much custom interactivity you need (Storyline blocks in Rise, Layout work in Elucidat);
- build effort: course length, interactivity, media, voiceover, review rounds and LMS testing.
If an agency builds the course, you may not need your own license at all to run it: an exported Rise package runs in your LMS without one. With Elucidat, hosted releases need an active Elucidat account, so plan who owns the subscription.
What reviewers say
| Software Advice (checked October 16, 2026) | Articulate 360 | Create (formerly Elucidat) |
|---|---|---|
| Overall rating | 4.7 / 5 (698 reviews) | 4.6 / 5 (28 reviews) |
| Ease of use | 4.6 | 4.6 |
| Value for money | 4.4 | 4.5 |
| Customer support | 4.6 | 4.9 |
| Functionality | 4.6 | 4.6 |
Read this with two cautions. The Articulate 360 score covers the whole suite, including Storyline, not Rise alone. And Elucidat has far fewer reviews, so one review moves its averages more. Users rate both tools well; Create's highest score is for customer support.
Which should you choose?
Articulate Rise 360
A block-based web authoring tool inside Articulate 360.
- Fast to learn, responsive by default, exports self-contained SCORM, xAPI, cmi5 and AICC packages; Storyline included for custom interactions.
- Limited layout control; no rules-based paths by role; translation needs Localization credits.
Small and mid-sized L&D teams, SME authors, onboarding, product updates and microlearning that must ship quickly.
Elucidat
A cloud authoring platform (Author and Create), now sold by Confirm.
- User roles and access levels, Rules for personalized paths, Parent and Variation translation with Auto-Translate, re-release and analytics.
- Prices on request; hosted releases depend on an active account; Author takes longer to learn.
Large or global teams with many authors and reviewers, frequent updates and multi-language programs.
| If this is true for you | Lean toward |
|---|---|
| SMEs will build most courses | Rise or Elucidat Create |
| One course must serve several roles with different paths | Elucidat Author |
| Your translation vendor works from XLIFF or CSV files | Elucidat |
| Courses must run offline or behind a strict firewall | Rise (or Elucidat Backup SCORM) |
| You need cmi5 or AICC output | Rise |
| Many business units share one authoring account | Elucidat |
| You want custom slide-based interactions too | Rise (with Storyline 360) |
| You want the lowest admin effort for a small team | Rise |
Our view, based on the vendor facts above.
Not sure which tool fits your program?
Can you use both Rise and Elucidat?
Yes, and some organizations do: for example, a central team runs a multi-language compliance program in Elucidat while regional teams build quick updates in Rise. Both tools publish SCORM, so both kinds of course can sit in the same LMS.
Two things to plan for:
No converter between them
Neither vendor's help docs describe importing a Rise course into Elucidat or the other way round. Moving a course means rebuilding it in the other tool.
Two brand setups
Rise Brands and Elucidat Styles are separate, so keep one brand guide and apply it in both.
Common mistakes when choosing
- Choosing on features you will not use. Rules and custom roles are powerful, but a three-person team may never need them.
- Ignoring hosting. Ask where the course runs after publishing and what happens if the subscription ends.
- Treating machine translation as finished. Both tools translate fast; regulated content still needs human review in each language.
- Forgetting the authors. Pick the tool your actual authors can use, not the one the most skilled designer prefers.
- Skipping an LMS test. Publish a pilot course to your LMS and check completion, score and resume before you build 50 more.

FAQ
Rise is a fast, block-based tool for small teams, with self-contained exports. Elucidat is a cloud platform for larger teams, with user roles, rules-based branching, built-in translation and hosted releases.
Yes. Learning Pool acquired Elucidat on October 23, 2025. Confirm (formerly Learning Pool) now sells it as "Create (formerly Elucidat)", and its help center still uses the names Elucidat Author and Elucidat Create.
Rise, for most authors. Elucidat Create is also simple; Elucidat Author takes longer because of Layout mode and Rules.
Yes. Rise exports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI, cmi5 and AICC. Elucidat exports SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 and uses xAPI as a tracking mode; it does not export cmi5 or AICC.
Hosted releases (SCORM for LMS and Online Link) stop working when the account closes. Backup SCORM packages keep working, so export them first.
Both now handle it well: each keeps all languages in one project and can publish one multi-language package. Elucidat suits teams whose translators work from XLIFF or CSV files; Rise uses Articulate Localization, paid with credits.
No. Both are no-code, browser-based tools. Rise also has an optional code block for custom HTML, CSS or JavaScript, and Elucidat Author has a Developer role with API access.
Yes, for different jobs, since both publish SCORM to the same LMS. There is no converter between them, so moving a course means rebuilding it.
If you build often, a license plus your own team makes sense. If you build a few courses a year, an agency can build them for you: an exported Rise package runs in your LMS without your own license, while Elucidat hosted releases need an active account.
It depends on course length, interactivity, media, voiceover, languages, review rounds and LMS testing. A free quote from IKHYA includes a recommended route and a timeline for your project.
Yes. We work in both Rise and Elucidat, so we can rebuild a course in the other tool as a course redesign project. Your free quote includes a recommended route and a timeline.
