Customer training is structured learning that teaches your customers how to use your product to get results. For software companies it usually covers customer onboarding training, feature and workflow courses, and certification. IKHYA builds this content as custom eLearning: software simulations, short task videos, scenarios and assessments, delivered as SCORM or xAPI packages for your LMS.
What is customer training, and how is it different from customer service training?
Customer training teaches the people who buy your product how to use it. Customer service training teaches your own staff how to serve customers. The two terms are often mixed up, so it helps to agree on which one you need before you brief anyone.

| Aspect | Customer training (customer education) | Customer service training | Employee software training |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who learns | Customers, users, admins, partners | Your support and service staff | Your own employees |
| Goal | Product adoption, faster time to value, fewer "how do I" tickets | Better service conversations and processes | Staff use a new or changed system correctly |
| Typical content | Onboarding paths, feature workflows, certification | Communication, de-escalation, service tools | System rollout courses, process walkthroughs |
| Typical format | Self-paced courses, short videos, simulations | Workshops, role-plays, eLearning | Software simulations, job aids, microlearning |
Customer education is the wider term. It usually includes customer training plus webinars, certifications and community content. For a software company, all three columns often land on the same desk, and we build for all three.
Who we build software training for
Your customers and partners
Customer onboarding training, feature courses and certification for your customer academy. Written for users who don't report to you and will leave if a lesson wastes their time.
- Onboarding paths by role (admin, end user, manager)
- Customer product training on key workflows
- Partner and reseller certification
Your sales, support and success teams
Product knowledge training for the people who sell, support and implement the product, so they can explain a new release before customers ask about it.
- Release and feature updates
- Demo and objection-handling practice
- New-hire product onboarding
Your employees adopting new software
Employee software training for internal rollouts of ERP, CRM, HRIS or your own tools: show-me, try-me and test-me simulations so people practice before go-live.
- System rollout courses
- Process walkthroughs
- Short refreshers for rarely used tasks
Why software teams choose IKHYA
Practice in your real interface
We build software simulations of your product, so learners click through real screens in show-me, try-me and test-me modes instead of watching slides.
Courses that track in your LMS
Every course is published as SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004, xAPI or HTML5, and tested in your LMS before launch.
One team for content, tools and languages
Instructional design, development, media and localization from one company with 120+ specialists. We work in Articulate Storyline 360, Rise 360, Adobe Captivate, Lectora, iSpring Suite, dominKnow ONE and Elucidat.
Global customers, one program
Translation and localization into 40+ languages, with human or AI voiceover, for customers and teams in other markets.
Which customer training solution fits your release?
Software simulation course
A custom course built around recorded screens of your product, with guided practice and a graded test.
- Learners practice real tasks safely
- Results show who can actually do the task
- Screens must be re-recorded when the interface changes a lot.
Complex workflows, admin setup, ERP, CRM and HRIS rollouts.
Rapid course and microlearning
Short, mobile-friendly lessons built in Rise 360 or a similar tool, one task or feature per lesson.
- Fast to build and easy to update one lesson at a time
- Less room for deep branching or graded simulations.
Feature launches, release notes, quick "how do I" topics. See our microlearning development service.
Blended program
Self-paced eLearning combined with live virtual sessions, such as a product tour plus a live practice call.
- Self-paced parts carry the facts; live time goes to questions and practice
- Needs trainers and scheduling on your side.
Sales and partner enablement, certification, high-value customer onboarding.

Customer training best practices for software companies
Most customer training advice is generic. These are the points that matter most when the product changes every few weeks.
- 01
Teach tasks, not features.
Build each lesson around one job the user needs to get done ("set up your first workflow"), not around a menu. Tasks survive redesigns better than feature tours.
- 02
Plan for release cycles from day one.
Keep lessons short and separate, so a UI change means re-recording one simulation, not rebuilding the course. Avoid naming exact button positions in voiceover when a short on-screen caption will do.
- 03
Segment by role and stage.
Admins, end users and executives need different paths. A new account needs onboarding; a two-year account needs advanced workflows and new-feature updates.
- 04
Let people practice, then check.
Show the task, let learners try it with hints, then test it without hints. A test-me score tells you more than a completion rate.
- 05
Space the learning out.
A 2006 meta-analysis of 317 experiments found that the best gap between practice sessions grows the longer people need to remember the material. Short follow-up lessons after onboarding help knowledge last.
- 06
Measure behavior in the product, not only course data.
Link training to product usage and support data (see how to measure customer training ROI).
- 07
Make it accessible.
Courses built to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508 work for more of your users, including people who use screen readers or keyboards only.
Which tools are best for creating customer training programs?
There is no single best tool. The right one depends on how much simulation and branching you need and how often you update. We work in all of the tools below and recommend one per project.
| Tool | What it does well for customer training (vendor docs) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Articulate Storyline 360 | Screen recordings can be inserted as step-by-step slides in View mode (demonstration), Try mode (ungraded practice) and Test mode (graded) | Software simulations, branching scenarios |
| Adobe Captivate | Records software simulations in Demo, Training (guided at every step) and Assessment modes | Software simulations, 360-degree photo and video scenarios |
| Articulate Rise 360 | Adapts each course to the learner's device | Rapid courses, microlearning, release updates |
| iSpring Suite, Lectora, dominKnow ONE, Elucidat | Authoring tools IKHYA also builds in | Chosen to match your team's existing tool |
Tool facts are taken from each vendor's own documentation, checked October 14, 2026. If your team will edit courses in-house later, tell us which tool you own and we will build in it.
What we deliver
Content we build
- Customer onboarding courses and learning paths
- Software simulations (show-me, try-me, test-me) of your product or internal systems
- Interactive and animated software training videos
- Scenario-based practice for sales, support and partner teams
- Microlearning for releases and quick tasks
- Assessments and certification quizzes
- Blended learning packages (eLearning plus live session materials)
- Translated and localized versions in 40+ languages
Formats and standards
- SCORM 1.2 and SCORM 2004 (the standards that let a course run and report in most LMSs)
- xAPI, which records learning experiences beyond a formal course, on or offline, in a Learning Record Store (LRS)
- HTML5 for web delivery
- Accessible courses built to WCAG 2.1 AA and Section 508
- Mobile learning: responsive courses for phones and tablets
Which LMS will the courses work in?
Courses track in any LMS that supports SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI. LMS platforms we have delivered courses to include Moodle, TalentLMS, Docebo and Cornerstone.
We also test courses in other platforms your teams may use, for example Absorb, SAP SuccessFactors, Workday Learning, Canvas and Litmos.
If you have not chosen a platform for your customer academy yet, we also help with LMS selection, setup, implementation and migration, so the software to manage training fits the audience: a customer-facing academy has different needs (self sign-up, branding, reporting by account) from an internal employee LMS.

How do you measure customer training ROI?
Measure customer training ROI by comparing what trained and untrained customers do in your product and with your support team, then putting a value on the difference. Course completions alone don't show ROI.
| Kirkpatrick level | What to measure in customer training | Where the data comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Reaction | Lesson ratings, comments, drop-off points | LMS or course survey |
| 2. Learning | Test-me simulation scores, certification pass rates | LMS (SCORM) or LRS (xAPI) |
| 3. Behavior | Feature adoption, time to first key action, active users per account | Your product analytics |
| 4. Results | "How do I" ticket volume, renewal and expansion rates | Support desk, CRM |
To make the comparison fair:
- Pick one or two product milestones that mean "this customer is getting value".
- Compare trained and untrained accounts over the same period.
- Compare accounts of similar size and age. Customers who choose to train are often more engaged to begin with, so a raw comparison can overstate the effect.
- Track ticket type as well as ticket count: good training often shifts questions from "how do I" to "how do I do more".
The Kirkpatrick Model's four levels (reaction, learning, behavior, results) give a common language for reporting this to leadership. We build xAPI tracking and analytics into courses when you need data beyond pass and fail.
What drives the cost of customer training eLearning?
Every project is quoted on its scope. The main cost drivers are:
- Length: total learning time and number of lessons.
- Interactivity: simple click-through content vs graded software simulations and branching scenarios.
- Media: custom animation, video and voiceover.
- Product complexity: how many screens, roles and workflows need recording.
- Languages: number of languages and human or AI voiceover.
- Authoring tool: some tools are faster to build in than others.
- Review rounds: how many rounds your product team needs.
- LMS testing: how many platforms and environments we test in.
